Three-year position

In the past decade, the NCSU Libraries has made an unprecedented rise through the ranks of the Association of Research Libraries to its current position of 32nd among the 113 university member libraries.

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Geospatial Data Librarian to coordinate Collection and Preservation of At-Risk Geospatial Data, a three-year project. The North Carolina State University Libraries and the Library of Congress entered into a cooperative agreement to complete this $1 million project through the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP). The NCSU Libraries is partnering with the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information and Analysis to collect and preserve at-risk digital geospatial data resources from state and local government agencies.

Responsibilities
Identifies geospatial data resources and negotiates with project partners and data owners on acquisition of data. Oversees metadata capture or creation, and data ingest into the digital repository; maintains a database of holdings and associated digital rights information. Working closely with library colleagues, develops procedures and workflows, and supervises graduate student assistants. In collaboration with the principal investigator, prepares progress reports for the Library of Congress and attends national meetings with other NDIIPP participants. Participates in library planning, serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. NCSU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of Digital Library Initiatives.

Qualifications Required:
ALA-accredited MLS or relevant advanced degree, such as in Information Science or Geography. Familiarity with relevant current issues, technologies, and software applications. Understanding of the educational mission of a research university and a demonstrated service orientation. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing, with clients and colleagues. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; ability to work independently. Preferred: Two or more years relevant experience. Demonstrated project management experience. Experience with geospatial data resources. Experience with FGDC metadata. Familiarity with ArcGIS and ArcCatalog. Familiarity with a scripting language such as Python, Perl, or PHP. Familiarity with XML/XSLT. Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution.

The NCSU Libraries is the lead server site for NC LIVE (North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education), a multi-type library initiative, making digital resources accessible to the citizens of North Carolina.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and North Carolina State University form the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources of more than 13 million volumes, and collections budgets totaling more than $29 million.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of applicable education and experience, not less than $x0,000 for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC comprehensive major medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
