Portland POV
I got to Portland for Code4Lib early today and had a chance to explore the city with some of the usual suspects (UCSD and UNT Denton). I learned a couple of things. First, Rogue chocolate stout is awesome. Second, I should replace the mess of php and javascript at work with Django. As a bonus, I learned that packing a few terabytes of data into the trunk of a state car and driving it to DC isn’t necesarily a bad idea.

What is this with terabytes, trunks, and DC?

Library of Congress wants the data we’ve collected in our NDIIPP project and we were discussing the best method to transfer the data to them. In the early days of the DARPANET it was faster to transfer large amounts of data in the trunk of a Volkswagen than over the network. This story came up again this week at the conference. It’s my opinion that it would be faster and possibly cheaper to drive our storage array to DC, plug it in, and let them copy everything over to their systems. Sneakernet!
