Music

I’m not big into music.  I generally find it pretty annoying.  I realize that this isn’t a popular position, but it’s the truth.  I’d rather listen to just about anything on talk radio than music.  Anyway, we’ve been talking about how to deal with our massive CD collection and equally large, if less organized, digital music collection.  I’ve decided to start listening to Rhythmbox in shuffle mode and to discard anything I don’t like.  This is, of course, subject to mood, right?  No matter.

We’re digitizing the CDs or specific tracks that we like and are archiving the CDs in the attic for now.  I’ve got about 2GB of mp3s in my trash presently and have just started.   It’s amazing what I have.  Aphex Twins, Rammstein, Barbara Streisand, Kenny G., and other assorted crap.  I’ll tell you one thing I’ve learned from this.  Although you can use streamtuner and streamripper to rip hours of Internet radio, you shouldn’t.  You end up with Kenny G.

What I keep, I’m hoping to generate metadata for with Picard and musicbrainz.  It seems all those kids on Napster didn’t use controlled vocabulary and authority files to describe their music.

I like music more than you do, evidently, and I read this and think, hey, I need to get serious about ‘managing’ my music better. Then I remember that I have children and make a mental note to get back to this in, oh, 2022.

Hey, it’s not like I’m sitting around looking for something to occupy the hours. My wife is tired of plugging her iPod in, filling it up randomly, and then discovering she’s got an hour of Kenny G. You’d be plenty angry too.

Besides, backups (you do make backups, right?) are starting to get out of hand. The thing you haven’t discovered yet, it seems, is how to put your kids to work. I was fixing shingles on the family home at 8. Kids like to work. Their little hands are great for things like sewing and assembling lead toys and things.

Backups. Right. All the time, and religiously, too boot. My backup strategy is so embarrassing I’ll never commit it fully to words. Suffice to say, it involves optical drives, many other drives (sort of a personal LOCKSS, only driven by my brain, not software, so useless), and stern warnings to my wife.

I see your point about Kenny G. Angry is too mild. I think I’d be homicidal.

And, yes, you are absolutely right about child labor. Nothing makes my kids happier than a couple of cleaning rags, some cleaner, and something dirty to clean. They insist on helping me wash the car, too. I should really direct their attention to larger tasks, like rebuilding the deck.
